What is 3D Printing?
3-D printing is an emerging technology that has taken the world by surprise. Every organization and research sector is stressing on 3D printing to encash the enormous potential it has to offer. Hence, it is essential for us to learn about 3D printing.

But what is 3D printing? It is an additive manufacturing process to print an object from a given digital model. The word additive highlights that it would build a 3D object by adding layer by layer. 3D printing is quite opposite to the conventional manufacturing process or etching where material is removed from a block to build objects, such as in a CNC machine.
There are various type of 3D manufacturing processes available in the market however major 3 types as per their popularity are:
- Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) : It is an extrusion based 3D printing where a polymer is used as a filament to achieve layer by layer 3D object printing.
- Stereolithography (SLA) : It is a resin-based 3D printing process where the liquid resin in a reservoir or vat is hardened selectively to get the desired 3D object.
- Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) : An additive manufacturing process where lasers are used to sinter or bind powdered raw material into a 3D object.
In the real life you must have witness a Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) machine. Technically, it would use a filament which would be heated up to its melting point which would be used in building the shape of the desired 3D object, layer by layer. Selection of the filament material depends on the design, durability, functionality and cost. We use FDM as a standard printing method to make it economical and effective.
